The Truth About Why Women Propose in a Leap Year

by Charlotte Mostert on February 29, 2024

We’ve embarked on the year 2024, which is a leap year. Every four years an additional day falls in the month of February to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year or seasonal year.

The term ‘leap’ comes from the instance where an occasion such as Christmas (or any other day) takes place one day later than the year before. For instance, in 2022 Christmas occurred on a Sunday, last year (2023) it fell on a Monday and this year it will be on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday.

There are many different traditions all around the world that take place in a leap year. A common Irish legend has it that Saint Bridget once asked Saint Patrick that women be given the opportunity to propose, since men were too slow to do so.

Saint Patrick first suggested that women be allowed to propose on one day every seven years, however, he later settled on the opportunity to be granted every 4 years thanks to further convincing by Saint Bridget. In the 19th century this well-established tradition had some consequences if the man refused - he was expected to purchase gloves, a silk gown or a fur coat.

In this day and age, women are free to propose to their partner whenever they choose. But for those who enjoy the nostalgia in preserving the tradition, more commonly known as Bachelor's Day/ Ladies' Privilege, Tru-Diamonds™ has the perfect range for any gentleman.
