All aboard! Get seaworthy with the latest maritime trend. Straight off the ocean and onto the fashion pages of catalogues and glossy mags, this look is fresh and fabulous. It cannot be said that the nautical look is a new style, but it certainly is a popular one that keeps rearing its head in the land of fashion.
Back in the mid 1800’s, Queen Vic propagated this stripy style borrowed from French seamen, when she dressed the then Prince of Wales in a teeny sailor suit. The aaah-factor was astounding and style icon, Princess Diana and the Dutchess of York followed (ahem!) suit and donned their page boys in the same style ensemble. It was truly only when Coco Chanel took the navy, white and red onto the catwalk that the fashion peaked and became extensively accessible.
This classic trend is incredibly versatile and can be styled for virtually any occasion. It is possible, with a little know-how, to get a nautical number to look chic, subtle, fun or even elegant, depending on the required look.
For simple sailor style, pair navy micro shorts or skinny jeans with a striped top or tee. A thin red belt or hairband and red flat pumps will add the touch of rouge that rounds off this modest yet marvellous look. Add a splash of colour to take it up a notch to laidback elegance a la Kate Moss by adding a contrasting red jacket.
A more sophisticated look can easily be acquired by adding gilded accessories to the overall ensemble.
While most of them lead lives reserved only for the indisputably rich and famous, we tend to turn to celebs for style tips from length of hair to colour of nail polish. It is no doubt then that as the weather warms, it is to these famed figures we turn for seasonal trends.
Black and White
While just the word ‘spring’ might call to mind bright colours of floral prints, an emphasis has been placed on black and white designs. The good news is that these bold colours are appropriate for any time of year and are easy to pull off at any budget.
The short suit
If you have some funds to splurge on one thing this season, make it a short suit. This look is versatile and fun, yet office-appropriate and uber-stylish. Best to let the suit do all the talking so accessorise modestly with a small clutch and a simple pair of sparkling earrings.
The BAFTA’s might be about celebration and recognition of work done in the film and television arts, but it is also a platform for style and sartorial elegance. Even if they don’t walk away with a masked award, the industries finest show up in a grand effort to steal some limelight. There are always those that shine brighter than most and it is to them we look for style secrets and fashion inspiration.
The elegance of black numbers was, in true celebrity fashion, a popular choice on the red-carpet. Jennifer Gardner took command with understated sophistication in a black and white outfit with sculptural peplum detailing. She chose to enhance the trendy outfit with shimmering silvery accessories. Get glamorous like Gardner with platinum pieces like the Tru-Diamonds™ Diamond Cascade Earrings, the Sunset Boulevard Ring and the Command Performance Bracelet.
Amy Adams looked classically stylish in her Elie Saab couture gown complete with lace panel and black train. Her choice of ruby accessories added to the overall dramatic effect. Accessorise like Amy and add vivid jewellery like the Tru-Ruby Teardrop Earrings and the Truly Divine Tru-Ruby Cross for ultimate impact.
While many stuck to a safe monochromatic palette, Jessica Chastain and Marion Cotillard chose to wow with the colour pop trend. Jessica stepped out in an electric satin sapphire gown that got tongues wagging and heads turning for all the right reasons. The sapphire glow shone through in her brilliant blue gemmed accessories. Marion looked like a drop of sunshine in the dismal weather sporting a canary yellow Dior dress. She teamed the colour burst with bright red lipstick and dainty sparkling diamond jewellery. Shine like the sultry French actress with stunners like the Tiffany Style Bracelet, the Glowing Kisses Earrings and the Showstopper Necklace.
You probably realised soon after your 5th birthday that it is pretty difficult – almost impossible in fact, for most girls to resist a little sparkle. We are suckers for that which shines, everything that twinkles and all that glitters. Is it the way the light catches and reflects off the gleaming surfaces or the purity that it represents? Who knows – it is simply beautiful and we love it!
Dresses that sparkle: celebs have long been partial to frocks that flash and gowns that glimmer when taking to the red carpet. While the opportunity to wear such lavish attire rarely presents itself, get a taste of the all eyes on me effect with a more casually suited yet dazzling ensemble by pairing a shimmering top with denims.
Shoes that sparkle: put a twinkle in your stride and step out in a dazzling pair of shimmering shoes. Be it glistening heels or glittering flats, it’s the shine that will draw the attention to even the most casual of outfits.
Make up that sparkles: the shimmer is not reserved only for clothing. Carry the effervescence of this trend through to your face paint. If the eyes are the windows to your soul, illuminate the entrance with some dazzling glittery eye-shadow. Some subtle sparkling gloss will draw attention with each lick of your lips.
Throwing on a few fabulous and trendy items of clothing and some blinging accessories might make a lovely looking ensemble, but it takes a sense of style, grace and know-how to pull off elegance. Before you denounce the look as high-maintenance and too laborious, consider the words of an iconic fashion designer and put it into perspective: “simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance”.
An ambassador for elegance herself, Coco Chanel captured the quintessence of this look in eight little words. She laid down the foundation for style and gave us the primary starting block from which to build a truly elegant wardrobe. Some of her secrets are shared to get you on the road to refinement.
- Skirt length: few women are graced with perfect appendages of well-formed calves and toned thighs. Trade the meagre mini for a chic Parisian look with a hemline that sits just below the knee.
- Mix ‘n match: Chanel was a master at mixing masculine and feminine elements to create an original and trendy look.
- The gift of the LBD: we give thanks for the versatile and subtly sexy contribution of the little black dress. This item can easily go from daywear to evening wear with the simple switch of accessories. Gold works wonderfully to add that dash of elegance at nightM
- Comfort is king: the foremost thought of comfort and lifestyle led to Chanel’s luxurious yet comfortable clothing designs. Luxury should certainly be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury. Bare this simple maxim in mind when purchasing new items.
- Embellish away: we can learn something from Chanel’s the-more-the-merrier attitude where accessories are concerned. Her key secret was mixing real and faux jewellery and she was rarely seen without some trinkets to liven up even her plainest of outfits. When adding your adornments, take her accessory philosophy into account: The point of jewellery isn’t to make a woman look rich but to adorn her; not the same thing.
Just because the winter chill has set in with the temperature dropping at a rate of knots, doesn’t mean that you have to bundle up to the detriment of the glam factor and let style suffer. The trick is to cosy up to the season and embrace the bulk and layering; to keep warm while still looking cool.
Three simple style tips to follow as you snuggle down:
Faux Fur – a statement piece that will get you noticed, fur has to be the ultimate feel good chill factor feature that will have you wishing for snow and perhaps the odd blizzard or two. Sophisticated echoes of a bygone era made current with stylish accessories and on trend garments. Stack your wrist with Grand Premiere bangles or a very simple and elegant pair of Emerald Cut earrings.
Chic Capes – no Batman and Robin just the perfect snug option when you don’t necessarily feel like the full bundle-up and require rather a stylish piece that wards off the chill. You’ll look hot and confident with an on-trend bohemian vibe this winter. If you wear the cape with a visible neckline then accessorise with necklaces such as the Trilogy Necklace or the Solitaire Pendant. Sparkles will complete your outfit - Princess Eternity Ring or Solitaire Ring.
Scarves, scarves and more scarves – you can’t have enough this winter. In the style stakes opt for checks, stripes and solids and avoid cheesy prints. Paired with a classic coat and a sleek set of boots, you’ll be ready to step out in style. With wonderful styling options such as oversized bags and detailed belts, it wouldn’t be complete without a simple pair of classic Emerald Sparkling Crescent Earrings a Rhapsody Ring or even a pair of Glitterati Hoop Earrings.
Christmas is undoubtedly all about indulgence and spoiling, thoughtfulness and consideration for family and friends. However let’s not forget it is also about you. Seasonal spend for the clan aside, how do you go about updating your Yule time look, yet remain within budget?
All it takes is some tweeks to your own style, incredible jewellery and you are good to go:
Blush – quite often this hero in your handbag gets forgotten. An easy and super affordable way to spruce up this season is to select a shade that will add warmth and definition to your complexion. Try apricots, pinks and rose hues gently dusted on the cheekbones. Compliment with Emerald Cut Earrings.
Metallic top – one of the hottest trends this Christmas, certain to bring some jingle to any party, are dresses and tops in fabric that is sequined, metallic and glitter; gorgeously glam and sophisticated. Accessorise with a sparkling Grande Premier Bangle and Sapphire Inspiration Ring.
Wear a pair of faux eyelashes – this has to be the most affordable yet big mileage in terms of effect. For dramatic eyes that won’t go un-seen add a pair of lashes and some colourful eye shadow. Super stylish and sexy when combined with Emerald Inspiration Earrings.
It really is the season to be jolly and genuine good tidings we bring particularly of the stylish kind. While it can get quite manic at this time of year one can still multi task and look incredible at the same time. After all the Christmas tree cannot be the only centre stage sensation.
You cannot go wrong with a little black dress or a sexy tux but what about glamming things up this season and opting for a different focus. So take this moment to not worry about the table setting or glazing the gammon or how many presents you still have to wrap. This is all about you …
Happening Hair – soft and sexy curls that are oh so feminine are the rage this season; nothing over the top – easy, fuss-free styling to perfectly showcase beautiful pieces of jewellery. From simple to ornate anything goes. Poised to shine are the Glowing Wings Earrings, Sweetheart Earrings, Trilogy Pearl Earrings and Shining Splendour Earrings.
This is your season to enter centre stage, elegantly and gracefully; and who can resist a chance to dress up despite the nip in the air. Splash out on an elegant evening dress for a Christmas dinner party in either a muted tone such as champagne or even white, or be bold and choose greens and reds and really stand out. The trick is to not over accessorize; clean and simple lines win. Try a pair of hand crafted gorgeous Bel-Aire Drop Earrings and a sophisticated Tiffany Style Bracelet.
While glammed up appeals to anyone’s sensibilities, make no mistake that doesn’t have to mean ball gowns and intricate story boards. Sometimes casual glam fits the bill – this year’s leggings look is spot on – both comfortable and when combined with a pair of trendy heels, a fitted cardigan or tailored jacket, funky glam comes to town. Add selected jewellery to lift the entire look and un-fussed glam is yours. Complimented by a pair of Glitterati Hoop Earrings or the Monark Watch; perhaps the Hearts Ablaze Pendant or for a multi-layered statement several Tru-Diamonds Bangles.
Throughout the year, we turn to accessories to glam up our outfits and add a dash of fun or sophistication. While trinkets like necklaces and bracelets get lost under chunky knits, heavy fabrics and multiple layers, there are plenty of other trendy accessories and ornaments that can ingeniously warm up your winter look. The following tips will help you to stay snug while dressing for the big freeze in style.
Follow the fashion trend spotted at couture shows in Paris this season and stylishly slip on a headscarf. Colours and prints add another dimension to wintery ensembles. There are so many ways to wear this trendy accessory from casual to chic and everything in between, so take the time to play around with it until you find the style that you feel comfortable wearing. The Queen has been donning headscarves for years, in geometric shapes and lively colours. Clearly this frosty fad knows no age boundary.
Prints have been spotted on catwalks in shows in New York, London, Paris and Milan and are sure to influence this season’s wintery wardrobe. London high-flying fashion hotshot, Mary Katrantzou presented amazingly crazy yet chic and contemporary designs. From printed dresses and knits to patterned pants, get in early on this bold winter trend.
A celebrity notorious for her girl-next-door appeal and understated style, Jennifer Aniston recently made headlines for reasons other than her ties to smouldering ex, Brad Pitt. Her long and much publicised haven’t-found-the-right-one-yet search is now over after roughly 18 months with fellow thespian, Justin Theroux.
THE PROPOSAL: Jennifer gave Justin the best 41st birthday present this August when she affirmatively accepted his wedding proposal. After the tempestuous high-profile personal life coverage of Ms Aniston, news of the impending wedding topped the tabloids. Just then, Jen stepped out of her abode in Santa Fe giving paparazzi – and possibly those in the troposphere – the first glimpse of the rock that symbolised their commitment.
THE RING: The glittering gem is said to be a whopping eight carats of shimmering diamond. That does not cost the same as eight one carat rocks. As the size increases, so does the price tag, as each carat added makes the jewel that much rarer. Without confirmed knowledge of the designer, speculation is being made from the less than few photographs making the rounds. The setting appears to be yellow or possibly rose gold. Some say the stone is an emerald-cut diamond, which requires superior clarity because of the sizeable flat surface at the top of the stone that will show flaws more than most other cuts. Others state it is a cushion-shaped rose cut, featuring a flat base and a domed and faceted top. Either way, the sparkler is affluently humungous.
THE AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE: While most cannot afford the grandeur of a genuine gem of such magnitude, it does not mean they cannot acquire a simulated stone of opulence and splendour. Veiled amidst the extraordinary Tru-Diamonds™ collection lie extravagant pieces like the Emerald Cut Antique Ring, the Some Like it Hot Cushion Cut Ring and the simple yet sophisticated Emerald Cut Solitaire Ring.
While others are hazarding guesses of the actual cut and cost of Ms Aniston’s ring, get ahead of the glam pack with one of these refined and stylish pieces.
It might not be pure but it certainly is popular. The rouged version of glittering gold is undoubtedly making a comeback and rose gold is showing up everywhere – in status watches, necklaces and even on the fingers of betrothed celebrities! Being an amalgam of gold and copper, this pink-hued metal might not be the ultimate symbol of affluence, but it is a firm favourite with the stars.
Reese Witherspoon recently took to the red carpet in a simple black dress glammed up with a modest yet uber-stylish onyx and rose gold circular necklace. The dark backdrop of her dress allowed the rose gold to capture the limelight beautifully. The blush-hued metal seems to be making a widespread appearance in celebrity engagement and wedding rings. Leann Rimes’s fiancé spared no expense with a platinum band displaying a mega oval diamond encased in a rose gold fleur-de-lis.
Style guru Katie Holmes donned the sought after metal back in 2008 and Blake Lively’s light pink oval cut diamond, custom set in the blushed tone and pave diamonds, has brought a more recent rose gold revival. The tone of the metal allows for a modern approach combined with a vintage appeal making it the perfect blend of old meets new.
While rose gold might seem more exceptional than its yellow counterpart, the secret to its unusual shade is rather conventional – copper. As all gold used to make jewellery is mixed with other metals to increase its durability, it’s the amount of copper added that gives this tinged metal its ravishing colour. Another notch on the brilliance belt is its affordability, based on its weight of actual gold.
It might be that it is made to order or that there is a lesser amount being produced – but whatever the reason, the world of fashion loves nothing more than exclusivity, making rose gold that much more desirable and on high alert on the trend table.
